Described:
For neonates suffering from infant respiratory distress syndrome (IRDS), bubble CPAP is a non-invasive breathing technique. It is one technique used to maintain lung volumes during expiration in a newborn who is breathing on their own by administering continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). This technique uses a nasal mask or short binasal prongs to supply blended and humidified oxygen. The distal end of the expiratory tube is submerged in water to maintain circuit pressure. The amount of pressure created in the baby’s airways depends on how deep the tube is submerged. The gas “bubbles” out of the system as it passes through, preventing the accumulation of excessive pressures [1].
